Could Anaesthetic Nasal Spray Someday Replace the Needle?

Dental anxiety prevents millions of Americans from ever visiting their dentists or visiting only when unavoidable. Some are bothered by blood while others fear injury. There are also those who fear needles and injections. Researchers from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine have good news for those who fear injections. They have tested the safety, tolerability and effectiveness of a nasal spray that may work as well as anaesthetic injectons for dental procedures in the upper jaw. The results of the study, led by University of Buffalo Distinguished Service Professor Sebastian G. Ciancio, DDS, appeared in the Journal of Dental Research.1

The team studied 45 adults that needed filling an upper tooth.  Over 83 percent of patients, or 25 out of 30 who were treated with anaesthetic nasal spray did not need additional anaesthesia.

According to Ciancio, who is also the chair of periodontics and endodontics and director of the Center of Dental Studies, “Injection carries several disadvantages. The most obvious is the patient’s fear of pain. But injections also carry the possibility of exposure to blood-borne pathogens via needle stick; the risk that the anesthesia may not be effective; and injury or tenderness after the procedure.”

An unrelated study published recently found that anaeasthetic injections given when teeth are still growing inside the gums may inhibit the growth of wisdom teeth in some children.
